War and Peace: Original Version

This edition offers English readers a different War and Peace: Andrew Bromfield's translation of the 1866 text, the earlier and leaner version of Tolstoy's novel written before he added the long historical and philosophical chapters of the final work. It follows the Rostov and Bolkonsky families and Pierre Bezukhov through Russia's wars with Napoleon, with the French passages rendered in English and a notably different, happier ending. First made available to Russian readers only in 2000, this "original version" sparked a lively debate among translators and critics when it appeared in 2007. It's an inviting way into Tolstoy for first-time readers and a fascinating comparison piece for those who know the final text. Please note it is not the standard final text of the novel. Introduction by Nikolai Tolstoy. Ecco/HarperCollins, 2007. 884 pages.
